What is the difference between a car wash and a car detail?

A car wash cleans the exterior surface and takes a few minutes. A detail is a deep, multi-step process covering the interior, exterior, or both, including vacuuming, steam cleaning, clay, polishing, and protection. A wash costs a few dollars; a full detail takes hours and restores a vehicle inside and out.

A wash is about the outside and the surface. Whether it is a tunnel wash or a hand wash, the goal is to remove loose dirt and leave the paint clean for the moment. It does nothing for the interior and nothing for contamination bonded to the paint, and brush-style washes can actually add fine scratches over time.

A detail is a process, not a rinse. A full detail covers the interior with a deep vacuum, steam cleaning, shampoo and stain extraction, and cleaned and conditioned surfaces, and covers the exterior with a hand wash, a clay treatment to pull bonded contaminants out of the clear coat, often a machine polish to remove swirls, and a layer of protection like wax or sealant. The result is a vehicle restored rather than just rinsed, and it lasts far longer.

At Car Hub, detailing runs in tiers so the level of work matches the need: a lighter package for a maintenance reset, a mid tier that adds full interior steam and deep cleaning, and higher tiers that add interior shampoo, engine bay cleaning, clay, and machine polishing for a show-level finish. A wash is something to do every couple of weeks; a full detail is something most drivers do a few times a year.
